This first HD photo shows a statue of Geraud Christophe Michel Duroc, 1st Duc de Frioul who was known as just Michel Duroc, and this is positioned within a niche or alcove on the lower level of one of the facades of the famous Louvre Museum.
It was back in 1910 that it was decided to implement statues of Generals and Marshals of France onto the impressive facade, however, due to World War I, these were not put in place until the start of the 1920s.
There were numerous different artists commissioned to sculpt these statues, all depicted in their uniforms and this particular statue of Duroc was produced by Onesine Hulin who was born within the Nord area of France in 1835, and becoming a French sculptor he received the Legion of Honour in 1871.
Geraud Christophe Michel Duroc, 1st Duc de Frioul was born in the October of 1772 and the son of an officer he was educated at military schools, following in his father's footsteps, working up the ranks, and being devoted to Napoleon Bonaparte, he was provided the title of Governor of the Tuileries.
Duroc was responsible for the safety of Napoleon while in France and on his campaigns, but during one battle Michel Duroc was mortally wounded, and with Napoleon at his side within a farmhouse where he lay dying, requested that he take care of his daughter. Napoleon purchased the farm and erected a monument in his memory and he was honourably laid to rest within Les Invalides.
Here you can see a part of the long facade of the Aile de Rohan-Rivoli, which is a wing of The Louvre that faces onto the Rue de Rivoli, home to different museums called Les Arts Decoratifs and is on the opposite side to the Cour du Carrousel and a part of the Tuileries Gardens.
