This first HD photo shows a stone statue depicting either Charles Perrault, who was born in Paris in 1628 or Claude Perrault, who was also born in Paris in 1613, and this particular statue is classed as one of the famous men represented on The Louvre, but because of the attire being typical of both gentleman when they were alive we have been unable to ascertain which person this is.
Although here you can see a close up of the Charles or Claude Perrault statue showing the detailing that went into producing this, which was by Auguste Hyacinthe Debay, sometimes spelt De Bay, who was the son of a sculptor born in Nantes in 1804.
Initially studying under his father, he started out in a career as a painter, having been admitted to the Ecole des Beaux Arts where he won the Prix de Rome in 1823, and some of his works are now found within the Chateau de Versailles. Yet he soon turned his attention back to sculpture, becoming successful in this field as well and Auguste Hyacinthe Debay was also one of the sculptors commissioned to work on the fountains at the Place de la Concorde.
This photograph shows the location of the C Perrault statue positioned on the first level balustrade of the Aile Mollien wing of the famous Louvre Museum, and when you are standing in the courtyard called the Cour Napoleon, you will see that this is located as the third statue from the right hand side.
Now Charles Perrault was instrumental in many changes to take place throughout the city including being a part of the creation of the Academy of Sciences and restoring the Academy of Painting, yet is most well recognised for his fairy tale stories such as the Little Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Mother Goose, Sleeping Beauty and Puss in Boots.
However, Claude Perrault is also well recognised as one of the architects who designed the eastern facade of The Louvre basing the plan upon the books of Vitruvius relating to Roman work on architecture that Claude Perrault had translated into French. Yet also being a physician with a medical degree who wrote treaties on physics, natural history, etc, he was one of the first members of the French Academy of Sciences that Charles Perrault had helped to found.
Therefore, as we mentioned earlier, either one of these incredible gentlemen could be classed as one of the famous men depicted on the Musee du Louvre, and unfortunately we have not found any records as to who Auguste Hyacinthe Debay was commissioned to depict, although this statue was put in place in 1857 during the major renovation works of the famous former royal palace.
