A bas relief, or low relief, is a term used mainly to depict a specific style of sculpture, often located on a monument or building, and this first HD photo shows one of many that are located on a wing of the former Palais du Louvre called the Aile de Marsan, although we have been unable to find out a name for it.
Many of the bas reliefs were designed as allegories or depicting different themes such as gods, people from mythology or historical figures, and in this close up photograph you can see that the man is holding grapes and grape vines, but we do know that this was produced in stone by Mathurin Moreau and put in place in 1878.
Mathurin Moreau was born in Dijon in 1822 and became a French sculptor receiving commissions that can be seen at tourist attractions in Paris such as at the Musee des Arts et Metiers and the Musee d'Orsay, but some of his works are in other countries such as Argentina and Canada, plus he even became the Mayor of the 19th Arrondissement of Paris, still producing art works until two years before he passed away in 1912.
So when you are in the courtyard of the Louvre Museum called the Cour du Carrousel, you can see the entire facade of the Aile de Marsan, and this particular bas relief is located on the third level, to the right hand side of the fourth window below the pediment.
