Known as a Station of the Cross, this first HD photo shows a sculpture known as a bas relief depicting a biblical scene called Jesus Couronne d'Epines, which in English translates to Jesus Crowned with Thorns, that is one of several located within chapels in the Eglise Saint-Roch.
So here you can see a close up photograph showing the detailing that went into producing just this one bas relief with Jesus being restrained in a seated position while two people were placing the Crown of Thorns on his head, being watched by many onlookers, which was sculpted by Louis Pierre Deseine.
Louis Pierre Deseine was born in Paris in 1749 and decided to study sculpture, winning the Prix de Rome in 1780, and furthering his studies and career at the French Academy in Rome from 1781 for four years, upon his return he ended up receiving numerous commissions and was giving the title of Sculptor of the Prince de Conde.
In fact, Louis Pierre Deseine produced numerous busts of famous people and royalty, along with receiving commissions to execute statues, sculptures and monuments, with many being found at places such as the Chateau de Chantilly and the Chateau de Versailles, along with the Jesus Couronne d'Epines and several others of these, plus a statue group for the Eglise Saint-Roch.
However, this close up photograph shows another title for this particular bas relief plaster sculpture of Jesus Crowned with Thorns, which as we mentioned earlier, is known as a Station of the Cross, referred to as the 6th Station, yet these are also known as the Stations of Christ.
And this particular sculpture in its surround can be seen within one of the chapels on the right hand side of the Eglise Saint-Roch, as you have entered the church from the Rue Saint Honore in the 1st Arrondissement of Paris.
