Classed as a bas relief, or low relief in English, that was produced back in the 1860s for the wing of the former Palais du Louvre called the Aile de Flore, when you are standing in the Cour du Carrousel courtyard, you will see that this is located on the third level, and when counting from the left hand side, that is the relief to the right hand side of the sixth window along.
Unfortunately we have been unable to find out a name for this bas relief sculpture, although it was produced by Nicolas Victor Vilain who was born in 1818 and studied at the Ecole des Beaux Arts to become a French sculptor.
Winning the Prix de Rome in 1838 and being award the Legion of Honour in 1849, Nicolas Victor Vilain received numerous public commissions from the French state to adorn tourist attractions that were being renovated during this time.
So his statues and sculptures can be found at places such as churches like the Eglise Saint Roch and the Eglise Saint-Germain l'Auxerrois, along with several for The Louvre including this one, and Nicolas Victor Vilain was still producing works and exhibiting at the Salon in the late 1880s.
