Located on the balustrades by the roof line of the Aile Daru wing of the former Palais du Louvre, you can see an allegorical statue called La Marine, and as you are looking at this facade from the courtyard called the Cour Napoleon, you will see this positioned fourth from the right hand side.
This next close up HD photo shows the detailing that went into producing this stone statue of La Marine, which was by Georges Clere who was born in Nancy in 1819, and although he initially started studying medicine, he changed his focus completely and started to study sculpture under Francois Rude.
And becoming well recognised for his abilities, Georges Clere started to receive public commissions including several for the former royal palace, which is now the famous tourist attraction of the Musee du Louvre, however, as you can see, a small part of the tablet showing a compass on the Marine statue has broken off since this was first put in place back in 1857.
