This first HD photo shows a small statue called Groupe d'Animaux, which in English translates to Group of Animals, however, this is also sometimes referred to as Diane aux Chiens, which translates to Diana with Dogs, and this is one of the series of statues located on the Aile de Flore.
You will find that there are four different themes located on the facades of the Aile de Flore and the Aile de Marsan wings of the former Palais du Louvre, which can be seen from the courtyard called the Cour du Carrousel, and this particular one, that was put in place in 1866, is located to the right hand side of the third window group below the pediment on the third level of the Flore Wing.
So here you can see a close up photograph showing the detailing that went into producing the Group of Animals or Diane with Dogs statue, which was by Auguste Nicolas Cain who was born in 1821 and studied under people such as Alexandre Guionnet and Francois Rude to become a French sculptor.
Initially Auguste Nicolas Cain started producing small items for a renowned Paris jewellers like paperweights and ornamental tops for walking sticks, then progressed on to small bronzes, and he became recognised as an animalier, or sculptor of animals after starting to present works at the Salons.
From then on Auguste Nicolas Cain received many public commissions including large scale statues of animals that can be seen at tourist attractions around Paris such as the Jardin du Luxembourg and the Jardin des Tuileries along with several for The Louvre including this one of Diane aux Chiens, Group d'Animaux, but there are many other works of his found in different parts of the world including Glasgow, UK and New York City, USA.
