Located below the pediments on the third level of the Aile de Flore you will see many bas reliefs that adorn the facade of the former Palais du Louvre on either side of the windows, but unfortunately, even though they were designed to represent specific figures, we have been unable to find out their names.
However, this particular bas relief, called a low relief in English can be found to the left hand side of the seventh window group as you are counting from the left of this wing, or it would be the fourth relief from the right, and this was sculpted by Gabriel Jules Thomas.
Now Gabriel Jules Thomas was born in Paris in 1824 and followed in his fathers footsteps to become a French sculptor, winning the Prix de Rome, which then led to numerous different public commissions including several statues and sculptures for The Louvre, and gaining several awards and medals during his career, many of his works can now be found in museums such as the Musee d'Orsay.
