The Eglise de la Madeleine was originally designed as a temple, but after the fall of Napoleon King Louis XVIII decided that it would a church dedicated to Mary Magdalene, yet when the original architect died, the new architect decided that statues of saints would be added to the facades, and in this first HD photo you can see the statue of Sainte Helene, also spelt Saint Helena.
Helena came from a humble background and is thought to have been born around 250 and became Empress Helena, mother of Constantine the Great, and Saint Helena is highly regarded in the history of Christianity from her acts of charity and building churches in Rome, plus according to tradition on a pilgrimage to the Holy Land, she found the True Cross. So regarded as a saint in the Roman Catholic religion, her feast is 18th August.
This next close up photograph shows the pedestal base of the statue with the name Sainte Helene inscribed on it, and according to some sources this statue was sculpted by Antonin Mercie, or Jean Antonin Mercier, yet this is very unlikely considering that he was only born in 1845 and all of the statues depicting saints on the Eglise de la Madeleine were already in place when it was officially consecrated as a church in 1842.
But here you can see the location of the Saint Helena statue located within a niche on the portico facade of the Madeleine church, which can be seen from in between the Corinthian columns as you are standing in the Place de la Madeleine.
