The flying buttress system of arched exterior supports you can see in this photo are found at the back of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris, and it was one of the first buildings in the world to use this strategy in order to bring stability to the Gothic architecture that had predominantly thinner walls than other styles constructed prior.
