In the mid part of the 1800s there were only a handful of parks and gardens in Paris that were open to the public, which were actually former royal residences such as the Jardins des Tuileries that were designed in a formal French style utilising symmetry.

However, by the late 18th century the English style of garden was becoming popular and started to spread to other countries in Europe including France, which was based upon nature and a rustic feel, so when the Trocadero Gardens were designed for the 1878 World Fair, this style was adopted, as you can see from this photograph with a haphazard approach utilising rocks, etc.
