High definition photos of Jardin des Plantes in Paris
The Jardin des Plantes was first founded back in 1626 as a botanical garden of medicinal plants, and over the years these gardens have now become home to the Menagerie Zoo Historique de Paris, the Grande Galerie de l'Evolution, the Galeries d'Anatomie comparee et de Paléontologie, along with restaurants, statues and much more you can enjoy.

This first photograph we took shows the front facade of the Grande Galerie de l'Evolution that is inside Jardin des Plantes, which is home to numerous exhibits including its centre display of the African Savannah, along with another section designed specifically for families with young children called the Galerie des Enfants, and this ornate building with its grand staircases dates from the 1800s.

You will also find different garden areas inside the Jardins des Plantes, and we took this high definition photo while we were within the Roseraie section, and as you can see from this picture the rose garden is also home to statues, sculptures and other unusual items, which have been placed around the many different varieties of roses.

This picture was taken looking in a North Easterly direction along one of the central paths within the Jardin des Plantes with its flower beds running along each side, which have been planted with some of the 1000s of different species of plants, flowers, trees and shrubs from all over the world that you can find while walking around this large and impressive botanical garden.

Now this is a photograph showing the central area of the Jardin des Plantes, which is close to the entrance by the Place Valhubert and the Gare d'Austerlitz train station, and in this image you can also see the roofline of the skeleton and dinosaur museum called the Galeries d'Anatomie Comparee et de Paleontologie.

While looking at a different part of the rose garden within the historical Jardin des Plantes, we took this close up photo showing one of a yellow roses while looking down the pathway that runs through the centre of this garden, which is located in between the Allee Hauy and the Galerie de Mineralogie et de Geologie.

This is a photo we took showing some more different plants within the Jardin des Plants, and the closest to us that most people will recognise is heather, yet you can discover so many other different species like lemon grass, geraniums, rosemary, catnip, different varieties blooming depending upon the time of year, and so on, which makes this a paradise for gardening enthusiasts.

Also you will find different statues all around Jardin des Plantes, and this particular photograph shows the Emmanuel Fremiet statue that was produced in bronze by the artist H Grebe, which was commissioned by the Jardin des Plantes and the Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle in Paris, then placed in the eastern corner of the botanical garden.

Information board about medicinal plants growing inside Jardin des Plantes
This is a photo we took showing one of the many plaques that you can see within the Jardin des Plantes, and as you can tell from the image, it is in French, but this particular board provides information about the medicinal plants, and states that these are presented by their botanical family or by their therapeutic actions.
Jardin des Plantes flower bed planted with the Australian Sollya Heterophylla
Here you can see a close up photo we took showing one of the many flowerbeds with its different plants and if you look carefully at the image, you will see a little hand written name tag stuck in the ground, and this says Sollya Heterophylla, which is actually an evergreen Australian bluebell creeper, and is just one of thousands of varieties of plants from all over the world that are grown within these gardens.

This time we were looking down the Allee Hauy, which was named after the French mineralogist Rene Just Hauy, who became a professor at the Natural History Museum and founded the Musee de Mineralogy within the Jardin des Plantes, and he is often referred to as the founding father of modern crystallography.

This is a photo we took of another historical building located within the Jardin des Plantes, which is home to the museum called the Galeries d'Anatomie Comparee et de Paleontologie and if you look carefully there are busts statues of prominent people positioned outside and inside behind the windows, and you may also be able to make out the dinosaur skeletons.

Information board about essential oil properties inside Jardin des Plantes
Here you can see another plaque showing some of the plants that have essential oil properties such as lavender, and they also have many therapeutic uses dating back hundreds of years, just like thyme that is mentioned as being used as an antibacterial and antifungal natural remedy, and hence why these have a place within this historical botanical garden in Paris.

Now the Jardin des Plantes is spread over an area of approximately 69 acres and as we have said before the garden has been split up into different areas with different themes, and this photo shows one of the walkways that goes through the central part of this historical garden that was originally known as Jardin du Roi up until the French Revolution.

This time we took a photo showing the main facade of the Grande Galerie de l'Evolution, and if you look very carefully at the image, you can see a statue in the middle on the second level with five stone busts either side that were sculpted to represent some of the key people who influenced the Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle and the Jardin des Plantes.

Picture of Georges Comte de Buffon statue sitting inside the Jardin des Plantes
In this photo you can see the statue of Georges Louis Leclarc, Comte de Buffon, who was a French naturalist born in 1707, and becoming a director of the Jardin du Roi, or Royal Garden, which is now known as the Jardin des Plantes, he had a major influence on future naturalists with his natural history volumes.

Red roses growing on arched trellises inside Jardin des Plantes rose garden
This image shows a different part of the rose garden in Jardin des Plantes, and we were looking South West through the trellis arches where some beautiful red roses were climbing up, and to the right of the image you can see the museum called the Grande Galerie de l'Evolution and on the left is the Galerie de Mineralogie et de Geologie.

Here you can see a HD photo we took of a different type of board produced by the Museum National d'Histoire Naturelle, which is part of the Jardin des Plantes, and this particular one provides information on the morphology of butterflies, yet next to this in the image, you can also see another plaque, which states the name Lupinus Polyphyllus, or large leafed lupin, that originally came from North America before being introduced into Europe.

This is a photograph we took of the building housing the Galeries of Comparable Anatomy and Palaeontology, which is a world class museum of dinosaur fossils and other animal skeletons, and also in the image you can see a part of a sculpture depicting a Stegasaurus dinosaur, which was a herbivore, and this is quite apt considering it is located, almost hidden, amongst the greenery of the Jardin des Plantes.

High definition photograph of the Jean Baptiste Lamarck statue inside Jardin des Plantes
This particulare photograph shows the statue dedicated to Jean Baptiste Lamarck, who became Professor of Zoology and was a prominent figure within the Jardin des Plantes during the early 1800s, and this statue is located at the North East end of the gardens along the Espalanade Lamarck, which was also named in his memory.

Picture showing a 35 million year old quartz mineral deposit on display within Jardin des Plantes
Now within this image you can see a very large archaeological quartz mineral deposit that is over 35 million years old, which has been placed within the Roserie garden area of Jardin des Plantes, and this is part of the mineral collections of the Mineralogy and Geology museum that is also located inside these gardens.

This photograph shows another mineral deposit on display in the Jardin des Plantes, with this one being located right by the entrance to the Galerie de Mineralogie et de Geologie, and this particular mineral cluster is a group of black quartz crystals that came from the Victoria da Conquista state of Bahia in Brazil, which weighs over 4,000 kilos.

In this photo, you can see another one of the entrances to the Mineralogy and Geology Museum that we took from the Allee Hauy within the Jardin des Plantes, and if you look carefully at the image, located on pediment above the columns and door, you will see the name Botanique Geologie.

Located opposite the Jardin Ecologique by a lovely picnic area within the Jardin des Plantes, we took this photograph of a statue called Denicheur d'Oursons, that generally means The Bear Cub Thief, which was produced by the artist Emmanuel Fremiet, who was a professor and animal artist for the Natural History Museum in Paris.

Jardin des Plantes information board about botanical plants that have tanins properties
This is another plaque within the Jardin des Plantes that relates to specific botanical plants that have tanins properties, and as you can see in this image, it lists their scientific names, provides a diagram of their molecular structure and also information on what these medicinal plants can be used for, such as topically with skin conditions, or as an anti diarrheal.

The Grandes Serres within the Jardin des Plantes are greenhouse buildings that have become classified as historical monuments due to the fact that they were constructed in the 1830s and the largest of their kind in the world at the time, and in this image you can see one of the smaller greenhouses of the Grandes Serres next to the Allee Mangin, which holds, tropical, rare and endangered plant species.

This plaque in Jardin des Plantes provides information on plants that have phenols or phenolic acids properties and where they can be found, along with a diagram of the molecular structure, and these acids have antioxidant properties, which have come to light more so in recent years.
Entrance to the Menagerie Zoo found inside Jardin des Plantes
Another tourist attraction inside Jardin des Plantes that is suitable for all the family is the Menagerie Zoo, and this is a photo we took showing the sign by the entrance for the zoo, which was first opened back in the 1700s and has a full name of the Menagerie Zoo Historique de Paris du Jardin des Plantes, and now hold over 1800 animals.

The Esplanade Lamarck pathway winding its way through the trees in Jardin des Plantes
With this photo we were looking at a part of the Esplanade Lamarck pathway winding its way through the trees, and wherever you wander you will see different plaques, like the ones in this image, which provide information on the different species of plants, trees, etc that you can discover when visiting Jardin des Plantes.

Now this picture shows a view of Allee Alfred Lacroix - Edmond Perrier that is located on west side of Jardin des Plantes, and this tree lined walkway was named after Antoine Francois Alfred Lacroix, who was a French mineralogist and geologist, and also Jean Octave Edmond Perrier, who was a French zoologist.

For this photograph we were standing on the Allee Guy de la Brosse looking towards the Grande Galerie de l'Evolution, which is the pathway that runs from left to right in the image, and this particular ally was named after the physician for King Louis XIII, Guy de La Brosse, who first founded the garden with medicinal plants purely for the king and his court.
