This particular Canteen Bus restaurant has been running for well over twenty years now and was the first one to open, but with its continued success, a second called the Canteen Bus Gobelins was opened in the 13th Arrondissement.
The main concept was to provide quality and quantity, which is actually quite unique for this city, as you find so many gourmet restaurants in Paris where you are served a la carte dishes that look exceptional, but make you want far more than what is served and often leaving still hungry.
Yet here at the Canteen Bus Alesia or at their other restaurant, you can enjoy a hearty meal of traditional French cuisine to satisfy virtually any appetite, yet at a price that will not break the bank, and with a wide selection of choices to suit almost anyone.
There is also a theme to this restaurant in Paris, which has a friendly warm and inviting atmosphere where you are surrounded by wood panelling and pictures in black frames of actors from different films, and even the dishes on the menu are named after films.
Cuisine at the Canteen Bus Alesia Restaurant
You will find traditional French cuisine served at the Canteen Bus Alesia, although there are options such as pasta and burgers, and there will be something for everyone to enjoy when you consider there are around 50 different options to choose from on the menu.
However, there are only two fish main dishes, which are Norwegian salmon tartare with onions, olive oil, lemon, chives, sauteed potatoes and salad or Sea bream fillet with fried potatoes, salad and lemon. But there are lots of other options including Omelettes like Spartacus with mushrooms and country ham or Rain Man with bacon and herbs, although we would like to point out that omelettes are only available at a lunch time.
Salads served at the Canteen Bus Alesia are very large and we counted over 15 different ones you could enjoy such as the Matrix Salad with tuna, tomatoes, green beans, peppers, egg, olives, fried potatoes, rice and chives. You also have the Jurassic Park Salad with walnuts, finely chopped ham, ham, tomato, corn, fried potatoes, pickles, olives and chives or the Desperados Salad served hot with chicken breast, bacon, corn, red peppers, tomatoes, rice and spicy cheese fritters.
Meat main courses are also very popular and come topped with fried potatoes and salad and you will definitely be impressed with the portions served, especially when you see things such as the Paranormal Double Hamburger with 600 grams of minced beef, fried onions, cheddar, lettuce, tomatoes, grilled ham, egg and olives.
But other options could be Grilled chicken skewers or Duck Confit topped with fried potatoes or sauteed mushrooms and salad, or perhaps either sirloin or entrecote steak with either pepper sauce, bearnaise sauce or shallots would be more to your liking and again in a large portion they come with fried sauteed potatoes and salad.
Jacket potatoes such as the 5th Element stuffed with ham, melted Brie, tomatoes, sour cream pickles and chives, the Cliffhanger with fresh cream, smoked salmon and chives or the Shining with chicken breast, mushrooms and cream are another great option.
As are the fantastic pasta dishes at the Canteen Bus Alesia, with names such as Nikita, which is tortellini pasta stuffed with beef and either a four cheese or bolognaise sauce, or perhaps the King Kong, which is tagliatelle with two types of ham, cream, mustard sauce and chives would be more to your liking.
And this is the type of restaurant where you really do need to make sure you are hungry, as we do hope that you will make room to experience one of the fabulous and overly large desserts, with delights such as a house chocolate mousse, a pyramid of profiteroles, large ice creams with a wide choice of flavours, etc.
And to give you a rough idea on the costs, the majority of main dishes are around €13.50 as of 2014, although some do go up to about €19, and desserts are an average cost of around €6 to €7, but some desserts are as low as €4.50. So, as we mentioned before, the Canteen Bus Alesia will not break the bank, and with their continued philosophy of Quality and Quantity, you will definitely leave feeling completely satisfied and ready for another bout of visiting the numerous tourist attractions and museums in Paris.
Visiting the Canteen Bus Alesia Restaurant in Paris
Now when it comes to visiting the Canteen Bus Alesia restaurant, it is located in the 14th Arrondissement close to many gardens and squares in Paris along with the Parc Montsouris.
And you may be pleased to know that they are open seven days a week all year round, which is from noon until 3pm for lunch, and from 7pm through to 11pm for an evening meal.
There is also WiFi access for its patrons and pets are allowed providing they are well behaved and do not disturb other customers, yet as you can no doubt imagine, this is a very popular restaurant in Paris, so reservations are highly recommended, but sometimes these are even essential depending on the time of year and if you wish to eat there as a large group.
And as for getting to the Canteen Bus Alesia via public transport in Paris, the nearest metro station is the Alesia stop via line 4, and the bus number 62 stops by this Metro station. Alternatively, a little further away in an approximate five minute walk you have the Port d’Orleans Metro stop also via line 4, but here is a tramway stop as well for the T3a line.
